Much of the content in Eyes on the Prize was extremely eye opening. As author Juan Williams takes care to introduce the various Civil Rights organizations as they emerged, the details made me cringe, especially Mamie Till’s decision her unrecognizable son’s casket open at the funeral. The horror on her face from seeing her son in such state must’ve worsened as she watched person after person pay their respects sobbing. As tough as that must have been for her, Ms. Till displayed unmatched bravery to expose the cruelty understanding fully that there would be backlash for her choice. The open casket brought this tragedy to forefront of America’s attention. This choice enforced Emmett Till’s name to mean something and go down in American history.
