Video Diary Assignment - (Joshua O'Steen and Daniel Frederick)

Throughout both the documentary The Hunting Ground and the song written by Lady Gaga, the victims of rape experience horrible trauma as their bodies are used by disgusting and evil men. The women in both the film and the music video are ashamed, angry, and deeply sad because they ask themselves: why me? Throughout the film, many women tell their stories about how they were raped and how it affected their lives. Many of the victims say that the worst part was the aftermath because so many people refused to help them, support them, or even believe them. In the film, CNN gave a statistic that 95% of reported rapes are true, so it is extremely disheartening that many people simply will not help the victims of rape or believe them. How can we as a people fix this issue? It actually isn’t complicated. Rape reports would need to be taken seriously and be dealt with effectively. This seriousness would make rapes and sexual assault more of the crime it should be rather than something someone can get away with. Moreover, victims need to be given large support from an organization or any institution rather than live with the experience alone. Finally, people need to be taught about rape in school at a certain age and be told the horrible stories from survivors so that when they encounter someone who has been raped or assaulted, they can support and empathize with them.
The organization we have researched is EROC, or End Rape On Campus, and was founded in the summer of 2013 by Annie E. Clark and Sofie Karasek. This organization’s objectives are to advocate for fair and equitable sexual assault legislation and policy, and hopes to educate and develop resources for employers, employees, students, and more. This organization is a fiscally sponsored project funded by NEO Philanthropy, and receives a significant portion of its funding from tax deductible donations. In regards to the manner, it is portrayed in the media, EROC is respected and seen as an organization fighting for a right and just cause.
