First Debate Analysis - Josh Shawver-Weiner

Clinton:
-Good at bashing him on his poor business record
-Good at speaking to intellectuals

-Bad at looking “too” presidential. Didn't hammer trump enough as a bully and Liar. Probably didn’t want to bring up her issues of trust.

- Allowed trump to be incoherent on issues like taxes and defense, attacking his nonspecifically would be a subtle attack.

Trump:
-Good at talking about non-issues, making them appear to be huge issues. Like the emails..
-Good at speaking to his audience.

-Bad still too stupid to fall for all of clinton’s bait. Each and every time. Speaks to his ability to stay on topic.
- TERRIBLE at speaking to intellectuals, his nonspecifically can be seen as a advantage and disadvantage. The people in the middle are looking for less specifically and are looking for a moral agreement with their candidate. No one is saying he appeared to presidential.

Box Score? Trump was able to set a precedent in the start of the debate but was unable to keep the steam going throughout the night. It was clinton’s “stamina” that allowed her to outlast the blonde buffoon across the stage. It was ultimately trumps inability to appeal to a consensus audience and his child like incoherence when making statements about anything related to policy.  In the end I thought Clinton ran over Trump. She was clearly more prepared and was able to stick to her campaign formula, I would have liked to see some more hammering on Trump’s stupidity instead of simply calling out his “Cavalier” attitude.

1st Debate

It is clear in that debate that no one won. But Hillary definitely did better. I feel she has so many opportunities to rip Trump shreds but never takes opportunities. Trump did not know what he was talking about it seemed. He made it even more clear to the world that he was a ignorant insane man. During the debate it was clear his mechanism was that he hadn’t prepared and that he was a ‘regular’ guy while Clinton was a ‘robot’ for obviously knowing her stuff. I think it’s honestly discussing also that he was interruptive and rude throughout the debate also. Hillary did an excellent job with keep a great posture and tone. She was on her best behavior while Trump was a maniac. I can only imagine that if Hillary would have put up the same stuff Trump did at that debate how much criticism she would receive from the media and voters.

Anyone listening to the first debate ought to be disappointed. 90 percent of it was basically mush. All the Trump supporters are still Trump supporters. All of the Clinton supporters are still Clinton supporters. The debate was done to move the needle for independents and those who are "undecided." What worked for Trump in the primaries has gotten old, and the questions are deeper, more personal but more importantly, contain more specific answers to which the "Donald" either didn't answer or couldn't answer. it's obvious who the POTUS ought to be, and it isn't an ill prepared businessman who can be baited by tweets and lacks sound temperament. You can only con the public for so long.

Hunting Ground

The title of the movie Hunting Ground, makes me shiver. The thought that sexual assault is now so common on college campuses is frightening for many parents and students. College campuses being called hunting grounds now seems to be so ironic.Parents are dropping their children off expecting them to receive great education and possibly a hoping for a better future for them. The Sexual assault epidemic is ultimately making it hard for many victims to receive the highly expensive education they are paying for and deserve. Colleges are ignoring this huge problem that is affecting students that may be victims. This ordeal really tells us how much institutions care more about their reputations than the mental health, safety, and comfort of their students. Hunting ground and Lady Gaga’s music helps shed a light on these important facts that shouldn’t be optional for people to acknowledge but required. It should be watched and discussed by parents to their children while growing up and in school communities.

This phenomenon recently played out in the case of the student at Columbia University Emma Sulkowicz after she protested the way her university handled campus sexual assault by carrying a mattress around on campus, which served as her senior arts thesis. Critics of Sulkowicz who doubt her telling of events, mentioned messages Sulkowicz sent to the man she accused of rape after she said the rape took place, but Sulkowicz said she reached out to him afterwards because after being close friends with her attacker. She is an avid advocate for sexual assault cases in college campuses.

Caroline Springer- The Hunting Ground video diary

Raising awareness about sexual assault and rape starts with open, honest, and informative conversation. Having organizations come into schools and talk about topics like sexual assault and consent will benefit all students. The Clothesline Project came to ETHS a few years ago and it was very eye opening. Each shirt that was hung up on the clothesline told a different survivor's story. This showed how often sexual assault happens and how traumatic it truly is. This allowed students to be more informed on the subject of sexual assault and empathize with survivors. With more organizations like this and honest open discussions on the topic we can prevent sexual assault while supporting people who have been affected by it.
End Rape on Campus was founded by Annie E. Clarke and Sofie Karasek in 2013. EROC’s key objective is to end sexual assault on college campuses. They are supporting survivors, preventing sexual assault through education, and policy reform on campus, local, state, and federal levels. End Rape on Campus receives its funding through donations. EROC has received support from many different news sources such as USA Today, The New York Times, The Chicago Tribune, and many more. These sources have written articles on the issue of sexual assault and how organizations such as this one are creating awareness and are helping support survivors.

Nuala Brennan Hunting Ground Reflection

Sexual assault/rape is a huge epidemic in today's society, as shown in The Hunting Ground. Not only is it way too common, but the victims often turn into the accused, especially on college campuses like the ones shown in the film. We need to raise awareness for both the crime and the treatment of the victims and lack of penalty of the aggressors.  Victims are taught that is is their fault and are supposed to not get raped, but instead of teaching to not get raped, we should be teaching to not rape. People should not have to change what they do because somebody else is being a criminal and abusing their safety and bodies. The best solution is to raise awareness of the issue through movies like this so that people see it's a real serious problem so we can start teaching consent education. Some ideas for how to do this could by creating organizations, making movies, TV ads, books and anything that uses the media because that is how news travels fastest. This needs to be taught in schools starting from a young age, obviously not too young because we don't want to scare children, but before it's too late, before our rape culture society has brainwashed the young people and possible aggressors.
Dana Bolger adn Alexandra Brodsky founded Know Your IX in 2013 after they had both been sexually assaulted in college. They created this organization which informs students that men and women have a right to influence reform of the title IX act in order to get better treatment of student victims. They are funded primarily through public donations. They published a guide for journalists about how to write about gender violence and it ended up being very controversial because some accused it of being supportive of the alleged victim and not considerate of the alleged attacker and their possible innocence. Some, on the other hand, saw the guide as very helpful and put it to use in their own work.

Hunting Ground Video Diary - Claire Wootton and Josh Shawver

In order to alleviate some of the pain left by sexual assault we need to remove the stigma from this tragedy. First to do this we must remove the victim shaming and shunning that goes on, enough of “She is only doing this for attention” or other awful things of that nature. Make this problem of attacks more transparent and remove the taboo-ness of the topic, we must be honest with our communities and understand that this is an issue that happens [statistically speaking] often. If we can remove the barriers of honesty that victims need to go through I think that will allow everyday people who have not been affected by this type of attack to be more open to dealing with it. At the end of the day a large issue with this problem is due to the fact that we live in a patriarchal society and the idea of a man committing such a heinous crime is often passed off as overly dramatic or not true. We need to remove the emphasis on what the man in society wants and transition to what all humans need!
The organization SurvJustice was founded in 2014 by Laura with the mission of increasing the prospect of legal justice for survivors of sexual assault. She saw, as we did in the movie, that often times even though survivor's wish for legal action to be taken, nothing is done by the authorities or charges are dropped on the account of there not being enough evidence. Denn herself was a survivor of sexual assault and understood just how hard it can be to know that her assaulters never had even the slightest repercussions for what they had done. SurvJustice, by policy, receives no government funding through grants (as most other organizations do) in order to remain disconnected from politics and government interests. Instead, they are funded entirely through private donors and fundraising/volunteers. For the organization, and sort of news is good news as their primary focus is bringing awareness to the issue and fighting the issue.

Nuala Brennan Debate Reflection

This presidential debate seemed like Clinton and Trump were mostly just taking jabs at each other and focusing on defending themselves, so the topics of crime and economy were the only ones that really got to be discussed.
Clinton did a really great job staying calm and keeping her cool despite some if the ridiculous things Trump said. She didn't allow him or his comments to affect her. She also was able to answer all the questions backing them up with facts so she was much more reliable that way. On the other hand, she was almost spitting out these facts like she was reading a script. In a way it's like she prepared too much. She did very well overall, I wish she had attacked trump a bit more because there were some instances where he was lying and should have been called out.
Trump spoke well, he was confident. This made him easier to listen/relate to for the viewers because he spoke more naturally. Although his voice itself was easy to hear, what he was saying was not. Trump repeatedly avoided questions, lied, interrupted, and was rude to both Clinton and the moderator. Additionally, Trump did not back u the questions that he actually did answer with facts or evidence.
Clinton was the clear winner because of her complete, factual answers and calm attitude, even if she didn't speak as naturally.
