A Time to Kill- Ginger Haller

1. What Carl Lee Haley did wasn't necessarily just under the law, but I think his actions were justifiable socially. A lot of people wouldn't blame him for killing the men that raped his daughter, and some people would agree that they deserved it.
2. Carl Lee Haley committed this crime because he didn't think the men would get a fair punishment. He could have waited until after the trial, but it was a very "in the moment" decision because the crime had just happened and he probably wasn't thinking completely clearly.
3. I don't think Carl Lee Haley should be punished because his actions were justified. Also I think pleading insanity was a solid argument because it is hard to think straight after a situation like that.
4. The scales of justice aren't balanced at all because they lived in a very segregated town. You could tell because the jury had only white people on it. There were a lot of racist people living in Alabama at that time period.
5. It shouldn't have mattered that Tanya was black but unfortunately that almost changed the outcome of the trial. It seemed like the Jury cared more about what happened to Tanya when they imagined her as white.
6. Due process does not work for Carl Lee Haley the same as it would for other defendants because he is black. They district the court was in was mostly white and so was the jury. Even though it worked out in the end, the jury definitely had a bias against him at first.
