'The Dark Magic of Kellyanne Conway' -Frances Hubbard

Kellyanne Conway

If you've seen any form of television news in the  past 6 months then you've either heard of or seen Kellyanne Conway. First she was a political commentator on CNN and Fox News, but in August of 2016 she became President-elect (then just the Republican nominee) Donald Trump's campaign manager. Upon his victory in the 2016 presidential race Conway was given the new position of Counselor to the President, meaning that we'll see Kellyanne on our T.V. screens for the next four years.
The New York Times op-ed piece "The Dark Magic of Kellyanne Conway" perfectly sums up the unbelievable way Conway helped Trump win the election and the perplexing grip she has on the news. Author Frank Bruni writes that "She's no mere mouthpiece, no measly surrogate. She's more like the David Blaine of political spin, intent on working feats of magic that few others would attempt and surviving situations that would cripple any ordinary mortal." Somehow Bruni captures the essence of Kellyanne Conway perfectly, and I agree with his descriptions of her media magic. It seems only Conway could be faced with a question about Trump's claims of illegal ballots being the cause of his popular vote loss and presidential behavior, and answer with "he's the president-elect, so that's presidential behavior," and come away not only unscathed but with widespread support. This incident and many others are discussed by Bruni in a funny and clever way, but the fact remains true. Kellyanne Conway has been able to positively spin anything and everything Donald Trump has said,
and somehow -- Bruni suggests magic -- has come out on top.
I love this piece, I truly do. Of course it's coated in liberal bias, but in doing so it highlights Conway's conservative bias. As someone who has often rolled her eyes and yelled at the TV when Conway is talking, it was the perfect expose on the way Kellyanne Conway has risen to the top of her field. I loved how the spin Kellyanne puts on anything was described as "magic" because I see that as the truth. Bruni sums up her "magic" best when he says "She looks cheery when attacking, even cheerier when attacked and absolutely radiant when descending into a bog of half-truths and fictions. It's always sunny on Conway's side of the street." It certainly will be an interesting four years with Kellyanne Conway as the mouthpiece of the highest office in the land, but at least we'll all get a free magic show with the news!
